Durham Juneteenth Celebration

THEME: "BRIDGING A CONNECTION"

This fun filled, educational and uplifting day begins with a Unity March from NCCU at 11:00 am. When the march ends at Hayti Heritage Center, an Opening Ceremony with songs, prayer, pouring of the libation and presentations on the origin and significance of Juneteenth takes place.

Organizations will have Information Booths at the Annual Durham Juneteenth Celebration and Unity March to inform the men, women, youth, and families of services (mentoring, tutoring, mental health, substance abuse, job services, etc.) and activities (summer camp, day camp, after school, athletic teams etc.) available in Durham and surrounding areas.

Entertainment throughout the day outside features grass-root artists performing old fashion gospel, reggae, blues, positive hip-hop, spoken word, jazz and R&B. Between performances, community leaders provide informative, educational, and influential information to educate attendees about Juneteenth, its significance for all people and social/community services and activities available in the Durham community.

VENDORS from the area sell an array of African and African-American clothing, art and artifacts, specialty items, crafts and delicious foods. Experts in their respective fields provide information, activities, and demonstrations.

The Health Fair includes blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, glaucoma and HIV screenings. Medical professionals from area health centers and hospitals are available for consultations. Health information is distributed including where services can be obtained in Durham – the City of Medicine.

Seminars on topics such as education (how to apply college and for financial aid), business ownership and starting a business, home ownership, credit and debt relief, financial independence, etc. are held in the classrooms in Hayti Heritage Center.
